The LA Conservation Corps is the nation’s largest urban conservation corps and LA’s preeminent youth development organization. We exist because we are concerned that 1 in 5 of LA’s youth adults is both out of work and out of school, and that they see no path out of poverty. We give young people an opportunity to improve their circumstances while they heal their communities.
Our programs equip these young people with life skills and work experience by employing them in a variety of conservation projects. Some of those projects include building parks, planting trees, refurbishing hiking trails and building community gardens. We also provide them with a high school education in our affiliated charter school. Our ultimate goal is to prepare LA’s forgotten youth for post-secondary education and living wage jobs, and to inspire them to change themselves, their communities and the world!

Founded in 1936, the Los Angeles Mission is a non-profit, privately supported, faith-based organization that serves the immediate and long-term needs of homeless and disadvantaged men, women and children. The Mission is among the nation’s largest service providers to the homeless.
Reverend I.L. Eldridge founded the original Mission in 1936. During its early years, the Los Angeles Mission was located at three different addresses, and moved to 443 South Los Angeles Street in 1949, where it operated until January 1992. The current 156,000-square-foot facility, located at 303 East 5th Street, opened on January 21, 1992. A deeper history of our neighborhood can be found in this article from the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce.
The Mission has been successful through the efforts of great leaders who have dedicated their lives to the pursuit of helping the homeless. Such leaders have been Dick Willis (First Chairman of the Board, 1977-1996), Reverend Mark Holsinger (Executive Director, 1977-1995), Reverend Mike Edwards (Executive Director, 1996-2000), Ron Gonzales (President, 2000-2001) and Marshall McNott (President, 2001-2006). Currently the vision of the Los Angeles Mission is upheld and led by Herbert Smith, President/CEO. Because of the guidance and direction of both current and past leaders, the Mission is fulfilling its mandate to reach those who are destitute and alone.

Solheim – which means “sun home” in Norwegian – is definitely bright in its outlook, providing a vital life for seniors. With excellent Skilled Nursing and Memory Care, Solheim is ready to serve the more frail adult as he or she ages, but we are poised to enhance the life of all senior residents. Solheim boasts 6 activity directors specializing in organizing lectures, classes, concerts, crafts and outings for all four levels of care.
Solheim has a full time interim chaplain, Pastor Kathleen Richter, who extends a warm inclusive welcome to people of all faiths, or none. We have Tuesday and Thursday evening Vespers and Sunday morning services in our beautiful chapel. Sometimes you may find our Executive Director, Jim Graunke, playing french horn at one of our services.
Living at Solheim one can burn both ends of the candle if desired. Some of our residents are up before dawn enjoying the beautiful gardens, while later risers may occasionally enjoy their breakfast brought to their room. Book club, genealogy, cooking, and travel presentations are a few of the other activities to choose from. Whether you are driving your own car or living a simpler existence, Solheim strives to offer an abundant and vital experience of life for all residents.
